IF asked to name the most surprising success of the last year, in British
boxing, many would undoubtedly say Sammy ReeSon. After all, the
22-year-old Battersea southpaw has apparently come from nowhere to
score 16 consecutive victories, win the Southern Area title and
establish himself as one of the leading contenders for the British
light-heavyweight championship.
PINKLON THOMAS probably won't get the acclaim he
seeks as long as Larry Holmes is around, but there seems
little doubt that he's now the world's best heavyweight.
Thomas answered important questions in his eighth
round knockout over Mike Weaver at Las Vegas to retain
the WBC title.
I DON'T know if it would be right to state that Eddie Thomas was lucky to have Howard
Winstone to manage or if the Merthyr Tydfil boy was fortunate to have the former British
welterweight champion as a mentor. Anyway, it was a good and profitable partnership as
Winstone lost only six of 61 pro bouts and participated in no less than 17 championship
fights of one sort or the other.
He was able to retire as undefeated British featherweight champion, the winner
outright of two Lonsdale Belts and the pride of having been world titleholder for a spell,
even if this was restricted to six months.
SOME years back a leading coach from another part of
the country asked Londoner George Bowers about the
secret of his success.
Bowers told him: "I work them hard when preparing
for a championship but then ease them off days before
a bout. I never let them leave their best work in the
gym — it's all reserved for the ring."
The bemused trainer had just seen his very talented
young boxer lose out to one of Bowers' charges. The
youngster handled by the trainer was good enough to.
go on and fight for a British professional title and it
took a man who eventually won a world title to beat
him.
