PENGE'S Mike Durvan produced some crushing bodyblows
to defeat Finchley southpaw Steve Griffiths on a
ninth-round count-out at Merton Civic Hall and take over
the Southern Area lightweight title vacated by Winston
Spencer.
LIFE can be cruel at times. Just a few months ago, young Javier Marquez seemed to have
made a big breakthrough when he fought a draw with Lupe Pintor. Marquez looked to be
on the way up, and Pintor on the way out.
Today things are totally different. Pintor is on top again as WBC super-bantamweight
titlist, and Javier's career may be over. He defeated Ramon Rico in California, but
immediately after the fight, the Californian Commission slapped a ban on him due to a
damaged retina!
BRITISH light-middleweight champion Prince Rodney
aims to keep busy and make up for lost time as he makes
his second defence, against battler Gary Cooper. Rodney's
manager, Frank Warren, promotes at the Britannia
Leisure Centre, Shoreditch, on Wednesday.
MIAMI welter prospect GLENN WOLFE avenged
his only pro defeat when STEVE LITTLE, from
Philadelphia, surprisingly quit after eight rounds in
their scheduled 10-round main event at Tampa on
September 18.
IN NOVEMBER 1949 Jimmy Pearce, 21-year-old
flyweight from Middlesbrough, made his London debut
after less than a year as a pro, and in only his second
eight-rounder. The venue was Manor Place Baths, and his
opponent was ex-ABA flyweight champion Henry
Carpenter, who was unbeaten in the paid ranks, and rated
No. 7 in Britain.
