THERE ARE those for whom the Lynch brothers' style of
management is much too indulgent. Traditionalists
wouldn't accept the meticulous detail observed in all
aspects of training, the scientific approaches to physical
preparation, the virtual cosseting of boxers in their
lead-ups to fights and the care taken to present a sharp,
but wholesome image to the public.
"The sport's about getting in the ring and fighting," the
old school would argue. But not so for Pat and Tom
Lynch: boxing is a philosophy for life; what you put into it,
you take out, so what you achieve is in direct proportion to
your overall efforts.
SHEER fighting heart and a stubborn refusal to admit defeat carried
West Ham's Mark Kaylor to the finest victory of his career as he
survived two knockdowns to kayo Errol Christie in their savagelycontested
final eliminator for the British middleweight title.
Christie was counted out after 2:35 of the eighth of the scheduled 12
rounds, and was still trying to haul himself up on the ropes in his own
corner as referee Harry Gibbs signalled the end.
It was a stunning climax to a battle of quite breathtaking ferocity, in
which the violence happily was confined to the ring.
MANCHESTER'S Najib Daho won the revived Central
Area junior-lightweight crown when he outpointed Kevin
Pritchard of Liverpool over 10 furiously exciting rounds
on his manager Jack Trickett's quality promotion at the
Free Trade Hall.
DETROIT middleweight LINDELL HOLMES (pictured
left) who knocked out Roy Gumbs in London but got
outboxed and cut against Herol Graham at Sheffield, is
having something of a resurgence.
He scored his fifth consecutive inside the distance win
when he stopped game New Jersey-Puerto Rican LUIS
RIVERA in the eighth of their scheduled 10-rounder at the
Inglewood Forum on October 15.
K E I T H WALL won't forget his trip with an Anglo-
Scottish side to F r e e h o l d , where the host side finished 9-5
winners. Wall, 21, f r om t h e Greenall St Helens club, went
down on a controversial points decision to Derrick 'Poppy'
Rolon. It was a verdict angrily disputed by the crowd,
especially a f t e r Wall's brilliant performance.
