WHEN a boxer is forced to retire through eye injury,
there is always an outside chance that innovative
techniques in modern surgery may repair the damage
and he will be able to continue his career; Maurice
Hope's corrective eye treatment to a detached retina
is a classic example.

THE ABU HEAVYWEIGHT champion Proud Kilimanjaro
is forcing people to take him seriously. He followed
up his victory last year over Mark Lee with a successful
title defence against Mary Konate, which was a good
performance.
The bout was held in Konate's home town of Abidjan,
Ivory Coast, on February 1, and Kili proved too strong for
his dangerous challenger despite being forced to take the
fight at short notice.

SO near but so far. Ray "Boom Boom" Mancini, loser
by one point on all three judges' cards, can bow out of
boxing in a blaze of glory after his magnificent effort
against Livingstone Bramble.
Mancini said afterwards he wanted to have a good
rest and see if he still had the same desire. But caring
manager David Wolf indicated he'd like this to be the
end.
Similar sentiments were expressed by Ray's father,
old-time lightweight contender Lenny Mancini, the
original "Boom Boom" who watched from ringside.
The strong impression at time of writing was that
Mancini's retirement anouncement would be forthcoming.

AARON PRYOR had to wage an unexpectedly tough fight to
retain his IBF light-welter title as he came from behind to win a
split 15-round decision over stubborn Philadelphia southpaw
Gary Hinton.
