BRITISH bantamweight champion John Feeney banks on
experience and solid rather than spectacular skills to cope
with the challenge of speedy young contender Ray Gilbody
in their 12-rounds championship at the Civic Hall,
Hartlepool on Thursday (June 13).
Gilbody goes into the bout shorn of his unbeaten
professional record and having recovered from a dose of
glandular fever. Ironically enough, he lost his unbeaten
tag when he was due to meet Feeney for this title last
February.
CARLOS SANTOS of Puerto Rico used slippery skills
from the southpaw style to frustrate and outscore French
challenger Louis Acaries over 15 rounds to retain his
International Boxing Federation light-middleweight title.
Acaries. strong but plodding, landed the heavier blows
but not nearly enough of them, as he lost a unanimous
decision on the cards of the three American judges.
THE DATE was June 28, 1948, and a crowd of 40,000 had turned up at Villa Park, in a
rainstorm, to watch the three Turpin brothers in action. Dick won the British and Empire
middleweight titles by outpointing Vince Hawkins. Jackie outpointed Ben Duffy, and
Randolph outpointed Alby Hollister.
Alby remembers that fight vividly, and told me: "In the first round I put Randy down
for a count of nine. It was the first time he had been floored. He had already put me
down, but had it been the other way round, who knows what might have happened?"
Knockdowns were the story of Alby's life. For instance, there was the fight with Jimmy
Davis at the Albert Hall in 1947, an eliminator for the Southern Area middleweight title.
LEICESTER middleweight Tony Sibson says he's disgusted
and feels like quitting following the European
Boxing Union decision last weekend to strip him of his
European crown.
Sibson, now left with only the Commonwealth title, had
been scheduled to defend against official contender Ayub
Kalule of Denmark and Uganda in Copenhagen on June
15. But a recurring injury to his left elbow has meant an
operation for bone fragments so he had to pull out.
Manager Sam Burns sent proof of the injury to the EBU
offices in Rome but they decided to strip Sibson due to his
failure to defend within three months.
