RAY GILBODY of Warrington made a successful first
defence of his British bantamweight title when he stopped
old rival John Farrell on cuts in the eighth round of an ugly,
bruising fight at the York Hall.
The end came after one min. 40 sees, of the round when
referee Larry O'Connell ruled the southpaw challenger out
with a bad cut over his right eye, one on the left eye and a
third on the left side of his forehead.
BRITISH heavyweight champion Hughroy Currie, Catford
survived the toughest six minutes of his
fighting life to outpoint all-African champion Proud
Kilimanjaro of Zimbabwe (16st 81bs) in their Saturday
afternoon live-TV 10-rounder at the Star Leisure Centre,
Splott.
IT'S been a long time coming, but Dennis Andries can be relied
on to take his European title chance against champion Alex
Blanchard with both hands at the London West Hotel,
Fulham, on Wednesday.
The British titleholder has had to wait almost two years to
fight for the EBU crown, and has fumed over the delay.
Like the Lloyd Honeyghan-Sylvester Mittee European
welterweight title fight last week, this match has more at stake
than just the European title.
HOME COUNTIES trio Danny Porter, Sean Murphy and
Everelt McLean assisted England's battlers to a surprising
but welcome 6-6 draw with Hungary, one of the world's
foremost amateur boxing nations. All three gained excellent
victories at the Leisure Centre.
