ERROL CHRISTIE and Mark Kaylor clash in their
controversial British middleweight title final eliminator at
Wembley on Tuesday — and there is much more at stake
than just a crack at the championship.
Boxing itself goes on trial, and the repercussions for the
sport, if the feared crowd trouble occurs, could be serious
and far-reaching.
UNBEATEN Camden Town featherweight Jim McDonnell gets
the chance to become European champion without having even
fought for the British title when he meets Jose Luis Vicho of Spain
over 12 rounds for the vacant continental crown in the chief
support on Tuesday.
The title was, of course, held by Barry McGuigan, but he gave
it up to concentrate on the WBA version of the world title.
McDonnell is also in line for a shot at the British title, which the
Irishman still holds.
BASILDON'S Terry Marsh fought with typical bravery to add the vacant European
light-welterweight title to the British crown he already holds when he knocked out Italian
champion Alessandro Scapecchi in the sixth of a scheduled 12-rounder at the superb new
Stade Louis II.
The former Royal Marine had to overcome the handicap of a, bad cut over the right eye
in the third round, caused by a clash of heads, before knocking the stuffing out of the
Italian who in the end appeared to lose heart and give up.
ON NOVEMBER 20 at the Annual Dinner/Dance of the London
Ex-Boxers' Association the winner of the Dave Crowley Memorial Belt
will be announced. This goes to The Boxer Of The Year as voted by
LEBA members. Dave was not only a fine champion, but one of the most
popular boxers ever to lace on a glove. And whenever I think of Dave one
particular fight comes to mind, against Johnny Cunningham (pictured
right), of Bethnal Green, at Southampton.
