CHARLIE MAGRI can walk away from boxing with his head high after his
spirited challenge for the WBC flyweight title against the formidable holder, Sot
Chitalada.
Magri's bid to regain the championship he held in 1983 ended during the
interval after the fourth round, when Manager Terry Lawless called American
referee Marty Denkin to the corner to retire his man.
The Londoner had an inch-long cut on the left eyelid, an injury which could
only have worsened, and there were signs that the Thai's cool, steady, and
accurate punching was beginning to take effect.

EUROPEAN welterweight champion Lloyd Honeyghan
meets his toughest opposition to date when he takes on
former WBA welterweight title challenger Roger Stafford
at the Albert Hall on Wednesday.
While the American may no longer be the fighter he was,
he is still a good test for any welterweight aspiring to world

title contention like Honeyghan.

KINGSTON super-heavyweight Bobby Wells continues
the defence of his ABA title at York Hall, Bethnal Green,
on Thursday, March 7, knowing he faces some stiff
opposition.
Whatever the outcome of the London ABA semi-final
draw. Wells will have to be at his best to ensure a place in
the finals at the Royal Albert Hall a week later on March 14

GOLDEN GLOVES took the club honours with a title
treble in the West Lanes and Cheshire finals that drew a
big crowd to Liverpool Stadium but the top individual
award, the Bessie Braddock Memorial Trophy was collected
by Kirkby's Paul Hodkinson.
Hodkinson, an England international at bantam, looks
all set to make his mark as a featherweight judged on his
brilliant first round victory over that dangerous hitter,
Dennis Oakes (St Helens), a reigning NABC champion.

MICHAEL SPINKS predictably pounded David Sears into
defeat in three rounds to retain his undisputed world lightheavyweight
title at the Sands Casino Hotel and now looks
around for the next payday.
