WATCHING live on TV in the early hours of
last Sunday morning, I thought Jermain Taylor
failed rather drearily to make a positive
statement in Memphis.
Negotiations for a clash with Britain's Joe
Calzaghe were in progress. But to keep that
fight alive and justify his demands for a $6m
purse, Taylor had to deliver against Cory
Spinks.
It was not just about winning, but looking
exciting: making the public believe he had a
genuine chance of defeating the Welshman;
proving he could feature in thrilling fights and
thus convince the TV moguls to invest more
significantly in him.
Whichever way you look at it, Taylor failed
dismally.

SCOTT HARRISON is in further
trouble. The former WB0 feather
champ was arrested in Spain
(again) last week following a
fight in a brothel. He was detained
over the weekend and released to
attend a hearing in Glasgow on
Wednesday relating to assaulting
a police officer.
It seems we will never see
Harrison in a ring again.

SOUTH AFRICA'S merciless
Commonwealth bantamweight
champion Tshifiwa Munyai is
returning to Britain to box on Frank
Maloney's June 15 bill at Crystal
Palace, where British champ Martin
Power defends against Jason Booth.
Gangling Munyai, of course, has
twice stopped Power and also
destroyed Lee Haskins in three
fights in the UK.
No opponent has been named
for Munyai, though there is interest
back in South Africa for him to box
world-rated Silence Mabuza

COURT is in session. New York-based
Irishman John Duddy has been
charged with performing far below
expectations in his unanimous 10-
round decision over Dupre Strickland.
As a result, the prosecutor has asked
the judge to sentence Duddy to the
over-hyped category of fighter who is
more style than substance. Let the trial
begin.
The prosecution's main argument
is that the scenario inside the Beacon
Theater last week called for Duddy to
knock out 37-year-old Strickland and
have little trouble doing so. Yet not only
did John have to go the distance, but he
suffered a couple of cuts.
Strickland was a complete unknown
from Louisiana; not exactly a boxing
hotbed, the judge is told. Dupre was
handpicked.
