THE old clock was put back a few years recently
when George and I climbed into the ring at the
National Sporting Club to box an exhibition in aid
of the Lillian Board Cancer Fund.
ALMOST anytime that one wants to start a jaw
jamming session around the gym all he needs to
do is to flip out that old time-worn query: " Are
punchers made or born?". Chances; are that
strong sides will immediately form into opposing
debate teams which have been known to erupt
into active demonstrations to back their own
theories on the subject.
PHIL MATTHEWS, the Lancashire middleweight, is likely to be
seen back in the ring at the London World Sporting Club on
January 15.
It will be his chance to prove his fitness and serious application
to training after his British title fight debacle in Manchester,
when knocked out in five rounds by Bunny Sterling.
Matthews, who was called to appear before the British
Boxing Board after the title defeat on September 19, has now
taken a job ait a garage in his home area at Brierfield, near
Burnley, and is back in training.
"He can show his worth and real fitness in this World
Sporting Club test and then fulfil his postponed date with
American Mike Lankester at Belle Vue on February 12," said
Jack Solomons last week.
Trainer Tom Daly told Boxing News: "Matthews has told
me over the phone he is now fully fit and in training. He
realises Ms follies of the past so far as training is concerned.
"I just hope he has, for after talking like Cassius Clay
he fought like Danny La Rue when he lost to Sterling, except
that Danny La Rue would have fought better."
FORMER European heavyweight champion Jose Urtain, of
Spain, outpointed ex-WBA light-heavyweight champion
Vicente Rondon, of Venezuela, over 10 unexciting rounds.
IN THE months immediately following an Olympics, intertionals
have a tendency to fall a little flat. But this was by
no means the case when England, still smarting from their
8-2 defeat by the Russians, duly slammed Ireland 7-3
before a capacity Liverpool Stadium crowd.
ALTHOUGH England have not sent a full-strength
side to Prague for Sunday's international against
Czechoslovakia it would be a major surprise if
they did not return home convincing victors.
OLYMPIC skipper Graham Moughton selected at lightweight.
This is the only surprise in the England team to
box the United States at Madison Square Garden on January
15, and when one considers the current dearth of
quality lightweights, and the decision of Munich rep Nevill
Cole to step up a weight it could scarcely toe described as
a totally unexpected move by the selectors.
REIGNING North West flyweight champion JOHN
LYNCH (Kensington) moved up a weight to tame
Halifax bantam PAT DEVANNEY at the Ancoats
Lads' promotion, Beech Hill Social Club.
