I'VE learned my lesson about forecasting long reigns for new world champs after the way
Rene Arredondo got flattened in Japan.
Arredondo looked set for a lengthy tenure as WBC light-welter champion after knocking
out Lightning Lonnie Smith in the fifth at Los Angeles in May.
I wrote in BN that the lanky Arredondo might be ready to join the ranks of the Mexican
ring greats. But then came the disastrous defence in Tokyo when Arredondo found himself
overpowered in one round by a southpaw slugger named Tsuyoshi Hamada.
I saw the video of the fight on the Spanish language network, and Arredondo never got
into it at all.

SOME called him the Black Prince, others the uncrowned British middleweight
champion. He beat title-holders galore, among them Gipsy Daniels, Ted Kid Lewis,
Len Harvey, Harry Crossley, Roland Todd, Jack London, also European champions
Leone Jaccovacci, Ignacio Ara, Herman Van T'Hof, and Michele Bonaglia. Yet he
never even, boxed for a British title, even though he was a Bradford lad. Why not?
Len had committed the unforgivable sin — he had been born coloured. And in the
30's coloured fighters were ineligible to box for British titles, irrespective of where
they were born.
