CHAMPION Barry Michael (left) and challenger Najib Daho ham it up for the cameras while Barry's wife Sandra keeps
the peace. But they'll be punching for real in Manchester tomorrow in an IBF super-featherweight championship
battle that promises to be one of the fights of the year. See our preview on pages 2-3.

IT IS very difficult in this part of the world not to gloat over
Barry McGuigan's defeat at the hands of the little known
Steve Cruz. That's because McGuigan had received almost
all the publicity as WBA champ at the expense of his WBC
counterpart, our Azumah Nelson.
This despite the facts that the WBC represents a far
larger and influential section of the boxing world and that
the McGuigan camp had been
unashamedly and arrogantly
ducking Nelson's calls for a
unification match, saying they
didn't "need him".

HOWARD DAVIS kept his ring career alive as he
alternately boxed and punched to hold undefeated Meldrick
Taylor to a 10-round draw in a clash of former
Olympic gold medallists at the Sands casino hotel.

SOME of us New Yorkers who watched Frank Bruno
unsuccessfully challenge WBA heavyweight champ Tim
Witherspoon. courtesy of HBO, were left with the
unfortunate impression that he was a distinct disappointment.
The challenger had a lot of moral support in the USA.
Witherspoon is not a charismatic character who captivates
the boxing world or the general public. Then, too, his image
was downgraded somewhat recently when traces of marijuana
were found in his urine after his bout with Tony
Tubbs.
