ANDY WILLIAMS' gamble in giving up his job paid
immediate dividends at the Star Leisure Centre when he
took the vacant Welsh lightweight title in a war with
MARK PEARCE which was in the tradition of those
tremendous battles in the 1970's which involved Mesthyr's
Johnny Wall and Martyn Galleozzie.

I T 'S a replay but with bigger stakes this time as former
European and British light-welterweight champion Clinton
McKenzie and Tony Laing are matched for the vacant
domestic crown on the Horace Notice undercard.
The pair met last year, at this venue, in what was just an
eliminator for the British title when Laing managed to
outpoint the more experienced McKenzie.

THE ABA championships always seems to produce a
yearly star, a man who shines brighter than the rest and is
the main attraction. Last year it was Floyd Havard, in 1984
Rod Douglas and in 1983 Horace Notice.
This year's standout performer has to be London welter
Darren Dyer, who has recorded six quick wins en route to
tonight's Wembley appearance. Dyer, a relative unknown
outside London before this year's title hunt started, meets
Mark Elliott in the final.

BARRY McGUIGAN, Ireland's WBA featherweight
champion, made a hit in New York last week on a promotional
tour to boost interest in his title defence against
Argentina's Fernando Sosa at Las Vegas on June 23.
