THERE is no doubt that Britain has benefited most from the shake-up in the EBU
which followed the death of Piero Pini. Although we hold only two titles, nine of our
fighters are either co-challengers for vacant titles or official title challengers. In
addition, in every other division British fighters are also rated No 1 or No 2 while in
a couple of divisions we have both No 1 and No 2 contenders.
Two French title fights were staged on different shows on May 18, and two new
champions crowned.

JUST UP the road from the Pinewood Starr Club in
Bracknell where Les Stevens coaches (see last week),
another former ABA champion, Les Morgan, has been
coach at the Markyate Club in Hemel Hempstead for nearly
25 years.
Born in Risca in South Wales, Les moved to Acton in
1942 and, apart from a brief evacuation to Birkenhead
during the War, London was to be very much a part of life
and boxing for the next few years.
Les actually started his boxing career with the Birkenhead
Club, where he had one bout under trainer Gerry
Beck. Back in London Les joined the Acton Sports Club
where he came under the guidance of Fred Perry.
He turned 'professional' for the first time in 1945 when at
the age of 12 years.

BUSTER DOUGLAS and Don King have settled their
differences in court, leaving the way clear for a title
defence against Evander Holyfield on October 25.
Don will not be involved in the Las Vegas fight, but will
be involved in Buster's next title defence, although not as
the promoter, always assuming the champion beats
Holyfield. And Sky TV are the favourites to screen this bout
live and exclusive

FLORIDA-based WBA cruiserweight champion Robert Daniels easily
came through his first defence when he unanimously outpointed Craig
Bodzianowski over 12 rounds at the Kingdome.
Bodzianowski (13st 8lbs), who had his right foot amputated in a
motorcycle accident six years ago and resumed fighting the following
year, couldn't pull off what would have been a magnificent win.

FORMER WBC featherweight champion Juan Laporte
suffered a shock in a warm-up for his super-feather title
bid when he lost a technical decision to San Jose's Felix
Gonzales (9st 4lbs) at the Civic Centre.
Laporte, whose NABF title was not at stake, was to have
fought Australia's Jeff Fenech for the WBC "interim"
championship with the winner to meet champion Azumah
Nelson. But with Fenech's withdrawal, Laporte was to be
matched with Nelson next month.
