Boxing News Magazine 1989  History

TONY WILSON found the punch to match the occasion as a single, venomous right hand
despatched old rival Brian Schumacher halfway through the third round of their British
light-heavyweight title plash at York Hall.
Wilson's victory gave him outright possession of the Lonsdale Belt, and hopefully earns
him an overdue crack at the European title. That would be just the reward for a fine
performance by the 27-year old Wilson  whose repeat win over the man he
defeated in last year's "Fight of the Year on a hard-earned sixth round stoppage was never
really in doubt

BELFAST middleweight Sammy Storey boosted his prospects
of a British title shot when he stopped durable
Ghanaian Abdul Umaru Sanda in the eighth and final round
bf their main event at the Ulster Hall.
The end came after two minutes one second of the session
when the much-improved southpaw Storey's late and
sustained onslaught prompted the intervention of referee
Barney Wilson (who officiated throughout).
It was an absorbing contest, laced with drama and
excitement  one of the best middleweight scraps to have
grace an Irish ring. Storey  conjured up a
virtuoso performance with his late, late show eventually
taking its toll on a game but outclassed opponent.

ITALY'S Maurizio Stecca won the vacant WBO featherweight
title by stopping outclassed Pedro Nolasco in six
rounds in the Milan Sports Palace on Saturday, January 28.
But the Italian Boxing Federation refuses to recognise
Stecca as champion of anything. They do not sanction the
fledgling WBO.

IF Tony Lopez is the main target for Barry McGuigan the
fight will have to wait for a while. Tyrone Jackson is the IBF
No 1 challenger, and he has just received a substantial
payment to step aside so that Rocky Lockridge can fight
Lopez on March 3. The winner must fight Jackson, and, if
their second fight is as tough as their first, Jackson could
have to wait until May or June for his shot, and McGuigan
until August or September for his challenge.

FORMER Commonwealth lightweight champion Mo Hussein
has decided to retire at the age of 26 following his
surprise title loss to Pat Doherty at the York Hall last week.
The popular West Ham fighter was stopped in the fifth
round with a very bad cut over his right eye, but before the
unfortunate ending it was clear that Hussein was not his
usual self.
