Boxing News Magazine 2011  History

I WAS disappointed not to read any reports in the national
press of that terrific fight between Liam Walsh and Paul
Appleby. It was not even mentioned on local TV.
All the space is given to football prima donnas who ought
to be made to watch the recording of the fight to see true
commitment, determination and courage. I hope it is
considered for Fight of the Year.

CONGRATULATIONS to both Garys
(Buckland and Sykes). Brave pros. Some
thoughts: the old adages, never fight to your
opponent's strengths; learn to box different
styles; keep the chin down. Sykes fought
the wrong fight and paid the price.
Buckland's got a brilliant repertoire -
credit to him and his coach. Some of his
punches had me salivating.

THOMAS HEARNS is the pick of the
nominees for 2012 induction into
the International Boxing Hall of
Fame. The 53-year-old, who claimed
'world' titles from welter to lightheavy,
is under consideration now
five years have passed since his last
fight. The ballot, due for submission
by the end of October, also includes
other first-timers Marc Johnson
and Dariusz Michalczewski. Trainer
Freddie Roach and announcer
Michael Buffer are debut nominees
in the non-participant category.

DARREN O'NEILL was the third man Ireland
qualified for the Olympics. He reached the
quarter-finals but couldn't breach the barricades
of middleweight Ryota Murata. The Japanese, the
eventual silver medallist who'd stopped number
one seed Abbos Atoev, goes into his shell but
then bashes straight punches back. Simple enough
but he worked it effectively. O'Neill was a brave
18-9 loser.
