England amateurs stun U.S.

Games reject leads the way for England

THE single, shattering left hook with which British
and Commonwealth welterweight champion Colin
Jones demolished defending European champ Hans
HenrikPalm may also have earned the close-cropped
Welshman a straight shot at the vacant world title.
Manager Eddie Thomas, himself a former triple
welter champ, flew to Venice this week to lobby
delegates at the WBC's annual Convention, and
Jones' superbly executed second round stoppage victory
must put him firmly in contention.

ELEONCIO MERCEDES of the Dominican Republic
outboxed and ultimately outfought the slugging
southpaw FREDDIE CASTILLO of Mexico to
take his WBC flyweight tide on a split 15-round
decision at the Olympic Auditorium.

LIVERPOOL flyweight John Hyland made his rejection
for Commonwealth Games duty look absurd with a commanding
performance in England's 7-5 defeat of a United
States team at the City Hall.
Hyland's almost faultless southpaw display in
unanimously outpointing Bill Hackmer from Lockport,
New York, underlined the error of his exclusion from the
Brisbane team, which may have cost England a third gold
medal.

COMEBACKS continue to be popular, and the former
WBC flyweight champion Chan Hee Park is the latest
fighter to stage a return.
The little Korean was very rusty and struggled to outpoint
the Japanese bantamweight Katsuyuki Ohashi in Seoul.
Park should be sharper next time.
