THE FACTS BEHIND DEMPSEY'S TOLEDO MASSACRE

Wounded in action twice, he went on to the British title

ROWE LOST HIS TIRE THEN FATE STEPPED IN

NO PLACE FOR PALMER IN ENGLAND SQUADS

WHILE the rumpus goes on over his WBA title shot, Ayub Kalule keeps
busy with a 10-rounder against David Love in Randers on Thursday, and
he's had the best possible preparation with his old rival Kevin Finnegan as
spar-mate. Kevin is due back from Denmark tomorrow (Saturday), but
intends to return there in September to sharpen up for his British title date
against Tony Sibson at the Albert Hall on October 11.

THE name of Tom Gummer may not mean a lot to the average fight fan of
today, except for those living in South Yorkshire where he is remembered as a
hero, both in the boxing ring and on the battlefield.

SOME fighters are natural crowd-pleasers. Billy Walker
was one, so was Terry Downes. and so was Mark Rowe.
Mark won the British middleweight title in May 1970 by
stopping Les McAteer in 14 rounds. But he held it less
than four months, losing his first defence to Bunny
Sterling.

TEN years after the disastrous 1968 Mexico Games,
where it had such a groundswell of talent meted out
such rough justice, Black African boxing has its best
ever year to date. Two world amateur championship
golds won in Belgrade and three Commonwealth Games
titles in Edmonton — results which would undoubtedly
have been even more impressive had the venues been
less white-oriented and had the top Ugandan squad
participated in either event — hallmarked the rise of the
Dark Continent on the amateur front.
