ABA FINALS PREVIEW...ABA FINALS PREVIEW

Would today's best have beaten the oldies?

SENSATIONAL amateurs Rudi Pika and Frank Bruno
meet tonight (Friday) in the most attractive heavyweight
pairing in the post-war history of the ABA
finals.
And, suitably, the explosive clash takes place in the
centenary year of the Amateur Boxing Association.
It's a fight where something has to give — a dream
meeting between two fierce hitters.
The Pika-Bruno clash tops one of the most intriguing
championship nights for years. Boxing News
amateur expert Brian Pigden provides an in-depth
preview and full background details on the finalists on
pages 11-14.

CROWD PLEASING light-heavyweight Shaun Chalcraft gained thrilling
revenge over old foe Ken Jones in a tremendous top of the bill at PorchesterHall.
Over £57 showered into the ring at the end of the truly memorable small hall
scrap. which provided eight rounds of free hitting, uncompromising aggreson

GERRIE COETZEE served notice on Mike Weaver that
he has a challenger waiting in the wings when he
knocked out American Mike Koranicki in 1 min 40 sees
of the first round at the Rand Stadium.
After all the talk of Weaver defending the WBA heavyweight
title against an ageing Muhammad Ali, negotiations have
suddenly come alive for a title fight between Weaver and the
South African champion.

HARROW light-heavyweight Pat McCann made
an unhappy ring return, being outpointed over
eight lack-lustre rounds by Carlton Benoit at
Blazers Night Club.

GEORGE GILBODY is the only Briton rated in the latest
official European rankings issued by the Association
Internationale de Press Sportive (AIPS). The ratings are
only of the first six and George gets a miserly sixth place
with Rumanian Drogomir Ilie, whom he has beaten, at
number four.
