hard-fought unanimous decision at t h e Taj Mahal. It
was Murray's most demanding fight since his loss to
Terrance Alii and went a long way toward answering
questions concerning "The Natural's" determination

Barker trophy for best stylist in the 1956 Melbourne Olympics was
that Boxing News didn't even rate the crew-cut RAF corporal as
being good enough earlier that year to win a domestic ABA title,
let alone amateur boxing's ultimate prize!
Writing in BN on Friday 27th April 1956 the "Bible's" then
amateur editor "Broughton" opined "Although George Martin (of'
Fisher ABC) will not In- pleased to hear that one of his rivals Dick
McTaggart is a southpaw, he should not be unduly worried."
In fairness, "Broughton's" judgement was based on future pro
star Dave Charnley ol Deptford's destruction of the blond
Dundonian inside a round in the ABA featherweight finals of 1954.
Again, not having hindsight, "Broughton" could not have
anticipated that M.% was to be the launch-pad year for an
amateur career ol unparalelled brilliance.
