DESPITE the loss of several top amateurs to the pro ranks, the 1990/91 season

HAVING BEEN a member of the Grants Committee of the Board of
Control Benevolent Fund for the past 30 years or so, a Fund whose
aims are mainly to help ex-boxers in need, I was particularly
pleased to receive a phone call from Lonsdale Sports chief
Bernard Hart, who told me he is organising a Gala Dinner at the
Grosvenor House, London, on Sunday, September 22. The proceeds
will go to the Entertainment Artistes' Benevolent Fund and
the Board of Control Benevolent Fund.
Money for our Fund normally comes from fines by the Board of
Area Councils imposed for disqualification in contests, or imposed
for behaviour which is deemed to be out of order. Also from
donations, and in this respect Bernard has worked over and above
the call of duty in raising money to pass on to the Benevolent
Fund.

THE NEWS that the WBC is sending a small delegation to South Africa could herald
the end of that country's long spell in the wilderness. The delegation will report to
the WBC Convention in Bangkok in September, when a decision will be made on
whether to end the WBC boycott.
The depth of abhorrence of Apartheid in the WBC was genuine even if the policies
were not always clear in their execution, so a lifting of the boycott will not be
undertaken lightly. If it is lifted, South Africa will really be back. There are about 20
South African fighters who would immediately be worthy of a place in the WBC top 30
ratings, which would greatly strengthen the ratings.
