BRITISH ABA SEMI-FINALS — DAY ONE

POWER overcame style and strength proved too much
for speed as Chris Eubank stopped Gary Stretch in six
rounds to retain his WBO middleweight title at a
packed Olympia Grand Hall.
It was a result that will disappoint those who
consider boxing a contest of skills - and one that
proved technique counts for nothing if not backed by
other qualities, of strength and durability.

BIG-PUNCHING Pat "Black Flash" Barrett is calling for manager
Mickey Duff to deliver the goods in the shape of unbeaten Mexican
Julio Cesar Chavez after retaining his European light-welterweight
title for the second time in two and half months at the Albert Hall.
Despite suffering the embarrassment of a second round
knockdown, Barrett got up to floor former ABA welterweight
champion Mark McCreath in the sixth and pounded him around
the ring to force the stoppage from Italian referee Lorenzo
Casentini.

IBF light-heavyweight champion Prince Charles
Williams overpowered the faded,'34-year-old
Californian challenger James "The Heat" Kinchen
in two rounds at the 700-capacity Circus
Maximus Arena in Caesars.

AFTER a 22-year quest dating back to before men
walked on the moon, George Foreman made his peace
with boxing before an adoring 19,000 crowd at the
Convention Center.
The brooding, violent giant of Foreman's world
championship reign had long been replaced by the
chubby, genial middle-aged preacher of the comeback
years.

A THRILLING bantamweight contest saw David Hardie outpoint
Michael Alldis to edge Scotland 2-1 ahead, but eight consecutive
wins saw England dominate this mini-International on the Monday
at the Norbreck Castle Hotel. With four of the visiting champions
selected for Europe and missing the trip to Blackpool, and the
strength of England on the domestic scene, the outcome of the
first of the new-look British semi-finals of the George Wimpey ABA
championships was inevitable. The final scoreline of 9-3 for
England included six wins inside the distance.
