Boxing News Magazine 1974  History

STRANGELY, Britain's most exciting champion is also, perhaps, the least
publicised. Larry Paul has yet to appear on a major London show, and his
meteoric rise, from Olympic Games reject to professional light-middleweight
champion of Britain, has practically gone unnoticed by national press or
television.

AS go the heavyweights, so goes boxing, they say — and for keeping the
heavyweight division very much alive during 1973 Muhammad Ali gets my vote
for the Outstanding Overseas Boxer of the Year.

NOT so long ago I was sharing a cable car ride
above the Spanish countryside with John Conteh
who had walked away, with head down, after a
shocking loss to an Austrian nobody with a pot
belly in the European amateur championships.

THEY say yesterday's heroes are soon forgotten, but the fight
fans, especially those who were following the game in the '60s,
aren't likely to forget some of the fighters who retired in '73.
Ralph Charles, Mark
Rowe, Pat Dwyer, Harry
Scott, and Ricky Porter
were among the great
crowd-pleasers of the middle
and late 60's.

A year which began unexpectedly promisingly for
English amateur boxing ended in the most gloomy
fashion, and what happened in between gives little
cause for optimism.

JOHNNY CLARK of Walworth is now called upon to defend his
British bantamweight title against Nottingham's Dave Needham
by March 6 and the contest is open to purse offers, the British
Boxing Board announced this week. The date can be extended.
Purse offers have to be in by January 18.
It has also been announced that the European lightweight title
defence by Italy's Antonio Puddu against Ken Buchanan is open
to purse offers with February 18 as the date by which this
contest should take place. Purse offers will be open until January
9. Clark is due to fight Salvatore Fabrizio of Italy in a European
title defence at the Royal Albert Hall, London, on January 15.
