HOMAS McDONAGH has hit out at
former British light-middleweight
champion GARY WOOLCOMBE for
withdrawing from purse bids for their
eliminator for Woolcombe's old title.
"I thought it was a great
opportunity for us to get back in
the mix," said the Mancunian. "I
don't know why he's pulled out. I'd
gladly go to London to fight him.
"I've got an eight-rounder on
March 6 [Jamie Moore bill], and if
i got a straight shot at the Rhodes-
Small [British title] winner after
that, it would be a bit of justice."
Woolcombe hit back, saying the
issue was a financial one. "The
fight's worth more than I was
offered," said Gary.
Both are promoted by Frank
Maloney, who says he offered
Woolcombe a flat fee to fight in
London or a lucrative variable purse
dependant on who won the fight.

TONY JEFFRIES is n ow the only free
agent left f r om the pool of Britain's
Beijing Olympians who plan to turn
pro. The Sunderland light-heavy had
signed with Fight Academy but that
deal has now imploded, with Jeffries
angry and disappointed.
"Dennis Hobson gave me a brilliant
offer that 1 couldn't refuse," said the
' bronze medallist. "But part of that was
that all my fights.would be live on ITV
4. It was all in the contract 1 signed in
November.
"Then, a couple of weeks ago, once I
got my licence, I asked for my signingon
fee. Dennis told my dad, who
manages me, that he couldn't get
TV so there was no money."
Jeffries n ow faces the prospect of
going with another promoter, who will
likely pay him far less than they would
have immediately after he claimed a
bronze in the Olympics.
"I was originally going to go with
Frank Warren and the other
Olympians," Jeffries revealed. "I've
been training hard, dieting to make
super-middle, and now 1 don't know if
what I was offered will still be there."
Warren has declared an interest in
Jeffries. "I've spoken to Tony," he said.
"I'm interested but we have a budget
and we've spent money elsewhere."
We have tried to contact Hobson
several times, but he has been,
unavailable for comment.

BRIDGEWATER Salford ABC hosted
their second show of the season
(sponsored by Bridgewater Security,
Heneghan Construction and 1010
Taxis) at a packed Pendlebury Royal
British Legion.
There were 10 bouts on with the
hosts winning six from seven. The only
loser was Tyrone Jones, clearly beaten
by Osman Asian (Gloves) in a battle of
unbeatens.
Ben Gorden broke his duck by beating
Sunderland's Clayton Atkinson in a
close, hard-fought encounter.
Two of last year's Golden Gloves
champions met in Marc Leach (36 kgs)
and I r um Greenwell (38 kgs). They
did not disappoint with Leach's switchhitting
dominating a fine bout between
two promising lads.
Bout of the night was southpaw
Adam Fleming against Isaac Lowe of
Lancaster Boys. Aggressive Lowe never
stopped trying but Fleming outboxed
him smartly to win on points.
Host duo Nick Pemberton and
Martin Mongan very narrowly
outpointed Jake Wilkinson
(Sandygate) and Jamie Sampson
(Hillsborough) respectively.
Head coach Paul Faulkner thanked
all the clubs that attended the successful
show, which attracted star guests in
former world super-middleweight
champion Robin Reid and children's
TV's Sporticus (Lazytown).
The latter carried the auction
memorabilia around the ring, gave a
quick gymnastics display and signed
pictures for all who wanted one.
