EVAN ARMSTRONG, the big-hearted Scot with
a gaunt look, gets quick reward for winning the
British featherweight title. He is to challenge
New Zealand's Toro George for the Commonwealth
title at Melbourne on September 6.

champion Eric Blake,
of Leatherhead, will not now
be meeting Australian titleholder
Tony Mundine in
Brisbane on July 16.
The Aussies have pulled
out of the match but have
agreed to pay us compensation
said Dennie Mancini,
Blake's manager
" We are disappointed
about this fight falling
through. Eric was looking forward
to it. A win over Mundine
would have made him an
official Commonwealth title

PADDY DOHERTY, aggressive
Irish light-middle international
from Ballyshannon,
is to box professionally
under manager Bobby Neill.
He will live in London.
Aged 23, Paddy has been
Irish champion for the past
two seasons.
He won a bronze medal in
the Commonwealth Games
last year, outpointing former
Olympic boxer Prince Amartey,
of Ghana, in his first
bout but losing in two rounds
to Tom Imrie in the semifinals.

 

TWO OF Ireland's three
bronze medal winners at the
recent European Championships,
bantam Mick Dowling
and feather Brendan
McCarthy, are in an elevenman
Dublin side for a contest
with West Berlin in
Berlin on August 29.
