JON THAXTON has vacated the
British lightweight title to face Juan
Carlos Diaz Melero of Spain for the
vacant European belt in September.
Thaxton's promoters Hennessy
Sports have come to an agreement
with Diaz' people and the pair will
meet in Norwich (exact date and venue
to be decided).
Thaxton, who lost to Yuri Romanov
for this belt in April, said it was a
business decision. "I'm very lucky to
have got a second chance," said the
Norwich man. "I have a big point to
prove but hopefully I'll beat Diaz then
win my Lonsdale Belt outright after
that."

OSCAR DE LA HOYA has scrapped
a proposed September 20 fight
following the announcement of
Floyd Mayweather's retirement.
Mayweather-De La Hoya II was all
set for September, after which Oscar
said he would box again - for the final

FORMER world light-welterweight
champion Kostya Tszyu is still one
of Australia's most marketable sports
stars, despite not having fought for
three years.
Tszyu was rated at No. 18 in the
list of marketable stars - and the only
boxer to make the top 30, despite
Anthony Mundine being a current
'world' titleholder.
The Top 30 list, compiled by
Sweeney Sports research consultants,
is recognised as Australia's definitive
sports industry study and is used by
businesses considering which Aussie
sporting stars they want their brand
associated with.
Australian cricket captain Ricky
Ponting topped the list ahead of
teammate Adam Gilchrist and
swimmer Grant Hackett.
Tszyu was listed above soccer stars
Tim Cahill and Mark Viduka, leading
rugby league player Darren Lockyer
and golfer Karrie Webb.
