THREE European title fights liave
been announced. Belgian banger
and welter champ JACKSON OSEI
BONSU, originally from Ghana,
defends against unbeaten Ukrainian
VIKTOR PLOTNIKOV in Antwerp on
May 3. The challenger has never
fought outside his homeland.
Another Belgian, bantamweight
boss CARMELO BALLONE, defends
against Spain's VALERY YANCHY
in La Louviere, Belgium on May 9.
Feather ruler ALBERTO SERVIDEI
of Italy risks his belt in a rematch
against unbeaten Spaniard SERGIO
BLANCO in Livorno, Italy, on April
24. Their first fight, also in Italy,
ended in a technical draw after
eight rounds, when Servidei's cut
right eyelid - opened in the sixth by
an accidental headbutt - worsened
and he was ruled out. The general
consensus was that Blanco was
well ahead.

THE trash-talking looked to have
paid off again after Showtime
confirmed the excellent clash
between Colombian big-mouth
EDISON MIRANDA and Danish
former WBC and WBA super-middle
champion MIKKEL KESSLER for
May 24. However, Kessler has
pulled out.
But the network has announced
a June 7 double-header featuring
the CARLOS QUINTANA-PAUL
WILLIAMS WBO welterweight title
rematch with VERNON FORREST
defending his WBC light-middle
title against Contender season one
winner SERGIO MORA.
That double-bill, on International
Boxing Hall of Fame weekend, goes
up against an HBO 'world' title
triple-header in Atlantic City
featuring Kelly Pavlik's defence
against Gary Lockett.

REPTON stariet MARTIN WARD won
gold at a multi-nations tournament
in Finland last weekend.
Ward had a bye into the semis,
where he stopped a Russian, giving
him three counts, and then in the
final outpointed a Welsh opponent.
"IVs very unusual to stop a
Russian," said Repton boss Tony
Bums. "But Martin told me he'd
seen the Russian and thought he
could beat him."
Ward is just turned 17 and
Bums had considered entering him
in the Senior ABAs.
"But he'll do the Junior ABAs
instead," said the Repton head of
coaching.
Earlier in the month Ward had
contributed to a week in which
Repton bagged no fewer than nine
titles: four Golden Gloves and five
N A a P s .
Martin and his brother John won
Boys Clubs crowns along with
Lerrone Richard and Brett Beadon,
whom Bums called "a bit special".
Golden Gloves winners included
Danny Arnold, "the best I've seen
for years"; Romario Wallace, who
was "impressive"; John Lee King;
and Mark Baker.
Beaten on points was Simon
Baker, but Bums described him as
"very unlucky".
Simon and Mark are sons of
Mark Baker, who was ABA lightheavyweight
finalist for Repton in
1990 and later a successful pro.
One who missed out on a
national title was Michael
McCarthy, beaten at the Southern
Boys Clubs semi-finals stage in
Wales on February 23.
Bums said McCarthy dropped "a
bad decision" to Leon McGoidrick
(St Jo's Newport! at Class C 60 kgs.
