CUFFORD ETIENNE, former
heavyweight contender, was
sentenced to 160 years in prison
for a string of crimes including
carjacliing and kidnapping and
attempting to shoot two policemen.
Puncher Etienne, 34, who fought
Mike Tyson, Nikolai Valuev (his
final fight, in May 2005) and was
nicknamed "The Black Rhino",
learned how to box during a
previous jail term. He had 35
fights, winning 29 and losing four.

RICHIE WOODHALL, the former WBC
super-middleweight champion, is back
in boxing after being licensed as a
manager and trainer.
He had a brief spell as ABA High
Performance manager and is now
working with the pros alongside father
Len in hometown Telford.
Their first two recruits are
pencilled in to make their debuts
on Ken Purchase's promotion at the
International Convention Centre in
Birmingham on September 8 when
Wayne Ekock is expected to challenge
Andy Haider for his WBF
Intercontinental middleweight belt.

FOR the last couple of years, the buzz
about light-middleweight Joachim
Alcine has reached hardcore American
fight fans. But the vast majority of us
hadn't seen the Montreal-based boxer
until the most recent installment of
Friday Night Fights on ESPN.
In handily beating a game Javier
Mamani, he raised his record to .27-0
(18) and even impressed the best 154-
pounder of recent memory, Ronald
"Winky" Wright, who was that night's
guest host. More significantly, Alcine's
victory earned him a shot against WBA
titlist Jose Antonio Rivera.
Unlike other undefeated prospects
occasionally featured on FNF who
quickly reveal they're more suspect
than prospect, the 30-year-old Alcine
possesses undeniable skill.

TOMMY WARD has a rematch with
World Cadets bronze medallist Obed
Mbwakongo in his sights after storming
to gold at the Four Nations with a
stunning 10-second knockout.
The Belgrave puncher proved a
smash hit on his England debut at
Liverpool Olympia on June 23-24,
blowing away Welsh champion Francis
McDonagh in the Class B (born 1988)
91 kgs final.
