AFTER his explosive rise
over the last four months,
Ryan Rhodes surely now
ifaces his severest test
lagainst Ensley Bingham,
whom the British Board of Control
have ordered him to fight by
July 31.
"Why not?" was promoter Frank
Warren's response to the inevitable
question of "Will it happen?"
"It's a fight the public wants to
see, both boxers want it and I want
to see it," he said, after watching
Rhodes' seemingly effortless dismissal
of Linden Scarlett before a
sparse crowd at the Hillsborough
Leisure Centre.

NEWARK'S unbeaten ESHAM
PICKERING (8st 12 l/41bs)
showed promise as he comprehensively
outpointed previous
victim GRAHAM McGRATH (8st
1 libs) in a super-bantamweight
four-threes. Referee Roy Snipe
scored 40-38.
The fleet-footed Pickering
showed some nice moves and
threw a good variety of shots to
befuddle Graham all night. A
right cross had McGrath backing
up in the first, but the Warley
man came back with some looping
rights of his own in the second.

LATE turning pro, John
Matthews (8st 81bs) deprived
Middlesbrough's Michael Gibbons of
his undefeated record by outpointing
him in a quality six-twos at the Yorkshire
Executive Sporting Club.
The 28-year-old Aldershot man
imposed himself on the former
double ABA runner-up from the
start, working well behind a solid
southpaw lead to put himself in
control.
