• SHEFFIELD middleweight
RYAN RHODES (11st 4Ibs)
took out late sub ROY
CHIPPERFIELD, Bury (11st 91bs),
in 46 seconds of an unediyfing
spectacle. The Board should ask
why Chipperfield's connections
accepted the fight - and why it
was approved at all. Rhodes had
been left without an opponent
after the withdrawal of Enfield's
Dean Barclay.

BRITISH light-heavyweight
champion
CRAWFORD ASHLEY
(above) will challenge
Dutchman EDDY
SMULDERS for the
European title in
Rotterdam on September
30 with all the tickets going
to invited guests only. A
win for Ashley could throw
him back into 'world' title
contention, with the highlyranked
Smulders looking
for a crack at the WBC title
expected to become vacant.

SALFORD'S Steve Foster,
who is preparing for a
double-title clash wth
Leicester's Chris Pyatt at the
Nynex Arena, Manchester on
July 6, took time out from training
to lend a hand to an antidrugs
campaign last week.
Foster (pictured left), the
IBF Inter-continental champion,
told children and parents
at the Old Trafford Community
Centre that: There's only
one way to deal with offers of
drugs and that's to say no!
Children have to make that
decision early in life," he said.
The local education committee
has already ploughed over
53,000 into their campaign to
rid the streets of drugs and to
educate the young. Foster presented
two VIP tickets for his
fight against the
Commonwealth champion to
be raffled to raise more money
for their efforts.

^ IN A four-rounder which
"•^opened the show,
Pittsburgh's PAUL
SPADAFORA (9st 51bs) took his
record to 9-0 (five early) with
a unanimous decision over
ANTONIO GONZALEZ (9st 3
l/21bs) from Brooklyn. Scores
were 40-36 twice and 39-37.
Gonzalez falls to 3-15-2 (one
early).
