IF ONE were to ponder the current British featherweight scene, no doubt the first name to spring to
mind would be that man Barry McGuigan.
In all the excitement following the gifted Irishman's recent inside schedule wins over Valerio Nati.
Charm Chiteule, Jose Caba, Esteban Eguia, Paul DeVorce and Felipe Orcozo, and the speculation
concerning his challenge against Wilfredo Gomez and Eusebio Pedroza for their respective world
titles, it's hardly surprising that McGuigan is the fighter presently on every boxing fan's mind.
And yet for all his brilliance, it's easy to forget that further down the scale there are other talented
feathers in the country, one of whom may soon be challenging McGuigan for his British and European
titles.

ONE of the greatest fighting men this country ever
produced was, of course, "the dashing, bashing,
crashing Ted 'Kid' Lewis", so famous for his active,
no-nonsense style in the years immediately before
the First World War, during it, and the 1920s. He
came out of St George's-in-the-East, breedingground
of many another courageous battler.
