SO MARVELOUS MARVIN HAGLER has gone into films . . .
Well, it's really not surprising, is it? Among his illustrious
predecessors at middleweight both Carlos Monzon and Nino
Benvenuti have appeared on screen. Of course, their films not being
in English, we are unlikely to see them on the television. But there
are plenty of other boxers who can be seen, especially with old films
padding out the summer programmes.

WITH due regard to such prominent characters as Danny
McAlinden, Jack Doyle, Jem Roche — even Jake Kilrain
and Dan Donnelly, I would say emphatically that the most
promising heavyweight to come out of Ireland was Jim
Coffey, the Roscommon Giant. I base this assertion solely
on his record because, although never having seen him box,
he was rarely out of the sporting headlines when I was
serving my apprenticeship as a boxing journalist.

POTTERS BAR heavyweight Jess Harding
scored his biggest win to date when he forced
former European heavyweight title challenger
John Westgarth to retire a f t e r t h e fifth r o u n d of
their scheduled eight threes main event on
Barry Hearn's Matchroom promotion at the
Festival Hall.

IN J U L Y 1948 Freddie Mills took the world
light-heavyweight crown f r om Gus Lesnevich,
the talented American champion, at the White
City, London, via a points decision over fifteen
rounds. Before reviewing the Mills world title
fights, a run-through of his early Bournemouth
boxing days might be of special interest to
younger generations who are boxing-minded,
and the many fans now in their 'sere and
yellow" who actually remember Bournemouth
in its boxing heyday.
