Trinidad accepts bet
WHEN Felix Trinidad and Ricardo Mayorga engaged
in a lively press conference in Las Vegas in May, they
each proposed a side bet but couldn't agree on the sum.
Mayorga suggested $1m. Trinidad said $5m.
Last week in Florida, at promoter Don King's offices,
the pair, who face each other at New York's Madison
Square Garden on October 2 in a bout billed as "Back
With A Vengeance", finally shook hands on a wager...
for $100,000 to the winner.
It's perhaps small fry compared with what each will
be earning from the pay-per-view bout, but an added
incentive nonetheless and a significant sum in
Mayorga's part of the world, Nicaragua.

Hearns added
MIDDLEWEIGHT hope Ronald "Hitman" Hearns, son
of legendary Thomas, has been added to Lou DiBella's
Mohegan Sun, Connecticut bill tonight (Friday July 30).
That's because young Hearns was left disappointed
a week ago when a show he was scheduled to box on
in California was scratched at the last minute. Main
event tonight sees Nate Campbell meeting Tiger
Martinez in a rematch of a controversial 2003 draw.

Bowden vow
MICKEY BOWDEN is moving up to super-feather
following his points defeat by John Mackay at
Alexandra Palace last month.
Mickey has pulled out of an ordered English title
fight against holder Steve Foster Jnr and is after
former British featherweight champion Roy
Rutherford, who is also going up in weight.
"I was dead at the weight against Mackay," claimed
Bowden. "The best man won on the night, but I'll be
bigger and better next time. First I've got to win on
September 10 at Wembley and then I'll get Rutherford."
Rutherford has been matched with Carl Greaves for
the vacant English 9st 4lbs belt. The bout must happen
by the end of October.

Calzaghe in clear
JOE CALZAGHE, WBO super-middleweight champion,
is in the clear regarding a dispute with his wife Mandy
a couple of months ago.
Police confirmed Calzaghe would not be facing
charges following an alleged incident. The complaint
against Calzaghe was withdrawn.
Now Joe can get on with his flagging career. He
twice pulled out through injury against Glen Johnson
in IBF light-heavyweight title challenges this summer
and saw the fight disappear when the champion, fed
up with waiting, decided to defend against Roy Jones.

WEST HAM Boxing
Club celebrated one
of their best seasons
when they held their
annual presentation
night at Plaistow Park Community
Centre on July 16.
Special guests were former Olympic
champion Terry Spinks MBE and hot prospect
Kevin Mitchell, both club old boys.
Matthew Marsh, who won his second
senior ABA title in March, collected the Frank
Sims Senior Cup.
Marsh has since turned professional and
hopes to make his debut later this year.
The Frank Sims award for Best Junior went
to Patrick Nugent, who won the NACYP title
in December and followed that up by claiming
a National Schools title in March.
