Ward joins LA show
• ANDRE WARD, the only boxer on the US Olympic
team in Athens to strike gold (pictured), is set to
make his pro debut on the Antonio Tarver-Glen
Johnson card in Los Angeles on December 18.
Ward, a light-heavy, is to be joined in the pro ranks by
teammate Devin Vargas, who fought at heavy but lost in
his second bout (points) to eventual silver medallist Viktar
Zuyev of Belarus. Vargas' debut is set for tonight (Friday
Nov 26) at the Sports Arena in hometown Toledo, Ohio.
On to America's disappointing super-heavyweight rep in
Athens, Jason Estrada, who makes his debut at the Foxwoods
Casino in Ledyard on December 10 after signing for Jimmy
Burchfield. Jane Couch meets Jaime Clampitt on the bill.

Rios in trouble
• ALDO RIOS failed a drugs test after beating Jason
Cook this month and could be stripped of the IBO
lightweight belt he won that night in Hereford.
The Argentine apparently had diuretics in his system
which are used as a masking agent for other drugs and
also to lose weight. They flush out drug metabolites
prior to a test.
Apart from the danger of dehydrating the fighter, this
is the reason they are on the banned list.
Results of a second sample have yet to come back.

Seeing triple
• MARTIN GETHIN'S arrival
means there are now three
Gethins on the pro scene. The
West Midlander joins brothers
Steve and Darren.
The Hylands from Dublin
are also three fistic brothers.
They are Patrick, Paul and
Eddie. Patrick and Paul are
both off the mark as pros.
Edward makes his bow
tonight in Altrincham.

Couch takes risk
• JANE COUCH bites the bullet and
boxes a six-twos on her own dinner
bill in Bristol next Thursday (Dec 2).
She faces Ukrainian LARISA BEREZENKO
just eight days before her rematch with
Jaime Clampitt in Foxwoods, Connecticut.
It is a calculated risk: Couch has beaten
Berezenko before, so knows the score.
She insists: "Ideally, I wouldn't have
chosen her, because she was dangerous
with her head [when they fought in May
2003 in the same city, Jane winning on
points over eight].
"I'll just have to make sure I hit her so
often in the head she can't get close."

AFTER staging another top-class show at the town's Lord Hill Hotel,
Shrewsbury and Severnside ABC have put behind them fears they were
existing on borrowed time.
Since the departure of trainer Ian Rogers to Australia during the summer, the burden of
running the club was placed entirely on the shoulders of head coach Colin Hough.
Associated with the club over 60 years, Colin is delighted to have been joined by former top
amateur and pro Cliff Gilpin, formerly with Donnington Ex-Servicemen's ABC.
