Jason attacked
JASON BOOTH is out of a proposed eight-rounder
in Nottingham on July 27 against Kakhar Sabitov.
The British and Commonwealth flyweight champ
was brutally attacked last weekend in his hometown.
He was whacked on the back of the head in a
dark alley, knocked to the ground and kicked. He
was found unconscious in a pool of blood.
The 24-year-old is making a slow recovery in
hospital. He has a large gash to the back of head.
There is optimism the attacker will be caught as
he was seen on closed-circuit camera in an area
rife with crime. There appears to be no reason for
the attack.
Russia's Sabitov now meets ex-WBC flyweight
king Malcolm Tunacao on July 26 in the Philippines.

Duran tribute
ROBERTO DURAN is coming to England again later
this year and the furthest stop south will be
Peterborough on October 10 at the Bull Hotel.
Kevin Sanders is to promote the event. Further
details available from him on tel: 01733 555916.
Tonight (Friday, July 19) in Panama there is a
grand tribute for Duran. Former opponents Sugar
Ray Leonard, Marvin Hagler, Iran Barkley, Hector
Camacho and Ken Buchanan are all expected to
attend in what is a celebration of his long-awaited
retirement.
Buchanan is definitely going and says he can't
wait to see his "new" pal - after years of bitterness
- following their emotional reunion here in March.
Also invited are Evander Holyfield, Bernard
Hopkins, Don King, Bob Arum, Jose Sulaiman and
Gilberto Mendoza.

Vitali injured again
INJURY-plagued Vitali Klitschko has pulled out of
a WBA International heavyweight title defence
against American Larry Donald which was to have
topped Universum's show in Dortmund tomorrow
(Saturday, July 20).
Vitali, elder brother of WBO champ Wladimir,
slipped a disc training and underwent surgery that
is expected to keep him out for three months.
The Ukrainian's only defeat is by Chris Byrd, who
was losing before Vitali tore his shoulder muscle
and had to pull out. Vitali also suffered a bad knee
injury just over a year ago.
The boxer said he was extremely disappointed.
He said he was in top shape.
The Dortmund bill goes on, with Luan Krasniqi
defending his European heavyweight title.

Brancos face jail
WORLD-ranked contenders Silvio Branco and
brother Gianluca have been arrested and
charged in connection with alleged loan-sharking,
blackmailing and extortion, plus being members of
an illegal criminal organisation.
Gianluca, the former undefeated European lightwelterweight
champion, is WBC No. 1 at the weight
and on the verge of a title shot at Kostya Tszyu.
He had intended to box in Rome on July 25, but
that show was called off when, for legal and
contractual reasons, the main event between
Vincenzo Cantatore and Wayne Braithwaite for the
vacant WBC title was again postponed.
Silvio, who beat Robin Reid, is WBO No. 8 at lightheavyweight
and still very much in the title mix.
Their father Vincenzo, 56, and seven others are
also accused. They face a prison sentence of up to
seven years if found guilty.
Gianluca is in jail right now, but Silvio has been
let out on house arrest. No court date has been set.

Cotto promoted
MIGUEL COTTO, the superb Puerto Rican
prospect coming off a stoppage over Justin
Juuko to go to 10-0 (8), tops his first pro bill on July
30 against Luis Ugalde, 10-7 (8), at the Lucky Star
Casino in Concho, Oklahoma.
"There's something unique and special about
Miguel," says his promoter Bob Arum. "He's a great
body puncher. Not good - great!"
