TWO fighters at the crossroads meet tomorrow
(Saturday) at Las Vegas when Donald
Curry challenges Mike McCallum for the
World Boxing Association light-middleweight
title.
Curry, considered a potential great until his
loss to Lloyd Honeyghan, needs to convince
the boxing world that the shock defeat was due
to weight problems.

THE Dutch shocked all at the 27th European Championship
in Turin by finishing tops among Western
European nations and the fourth overall.
Victory for coloured heavyweight Arnold Vanderlijde,
an evasive, spidery type who had already captured a bronze
in the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics, was not unexpected.
In fact, guided towards a lucrative professional career by
Hungarian coach Gyula Bodis since 1985, Vanderlijde was
the favourite for the gold in his category, and he is
universally anticipated to earn another medal in the 1988
Seoul Games, before crossing over to the paid ranks.

THE Frank Bruno-Chuck Gardner match was a disgrace
and deserved all of t h e criticism it received. Gardner was
criticised, Terry Lawless was criticised and the French
Federation was criticised, but not once did I see the name of
the real culprit mentioned. The matchmaker either asked
for, or accepted, Gardner's name from his agent and
offered Gardner to Lawless. It was t h e matchmaker's j ob
to make sure the promoter had acceptable bouts for his
show and h e is t h e man to blame for t h e farce.
