LLOYD HONEYGHAN'S reign as welterweight
champion of the world came to an unexpected end
when the Bermondsey boxer lost a technical decision
in confused circumstances to Mexican challenger
Jorge Vaca at the Grand Hall.
What is clear is that the bout, scheduled for 12
rounds, and for the champion's WBC crown only (the
IBF, whose crown Honeyghan also held, declared
their title vacant when Honeyghan lost) was stopped
about halfway through the eighth round when the
challenger sustained a very bad cut over his right eye
after a clash of heads.

FORMER British light-welterweight champion Tony
McKenzie (lOst 51bs) from Leicester showed impressive
form to stop Welshman Kelvin Mortimer (lOst 61bs) in the
third of their scheduled eight rounder on Frank Warren's
Seconds Out show at the York Hall.
But referee Reg Thompson's decision to call the fight off
after one minute 55 seconds of the session provoked an
angry protest from Mortimer and booing from the crowd,
who felt it was extremely premature.

BRITISH light-heavyweight champion Tom Collins gets a
overdue chance at the European crown when he challenges
the EBU titleholder Alex Blanchard of Holland at Savas
nightclub, Usk, in Wales, on Wednesday.
Collins gets the opportunity only seven months after
beating John Moody for the vacant British title, but when
he was British champion for almost two years back in
1982-84 he didn't get a sniff at the bigger earning
championships.
