GATTI started the year as he intended to continue: battling valiantly, though
unsuccessfully. His defeat by Manfredy was officially because of cuts, but although he
fought his heart out as always, he found Angel too tough and talented.
Gatti's left eye split open in the first and he found himself being outboxed before a sharp
left hook took Arturo's legs away in the fourth, sending him sprawling to the canvas.
About 30 seconds later Gatti was in the thick of battle again and taking command,
though his right eye was now bleeding at the bell.
The rallies continued into the fifth and Manfredy took several sledgehammer hooks
flush in the sixth. Arturo's left eye bled again and both were rocked in the seventh.
Gatti's passion was matched by Manfredy's precision, though by the end of the round
the doctor was called in to inspect the Canadian's injuries. His left eye was a horrible,
gaping mess and Manfredy continued to hit the target throughout the eighth. At the time
of the stoppage two judges had Angel ahead, while the third official had them even.

A FIVE-knockdown thriller decided the WBC's vacant interim light-welterweight
championship with Tszyu, who had Hurtado on the deck inside a minute, getting off the
floor twice with barely 90 seconds gone.
At the bell to end the first Hurtado was shaken again by a right, while Tszyu returned
to his stool with a swollen right eye. Hurtado, clearly still shaking off the effects of a
hectic opener, positioned himself on the ropes as both aimed to land the decisive
counter.
But with Tszyu's injuries worsening, the Australian started the fourth more
purposefully, hammering Hurtado's body. The Cuban's nose bled also in the fifth, when
a hard combination to the head and finishing left hook to the body sent the southpaw
underdog to the floor once more. Gallant Hurtado struggled to his feet at seven, but was
dropped again and rescued.

IT WAS fitting that two of France's premier fighters should stage an
epic in the capital's finest arena. Mendy, who would later win the WRA's
lightweight crown, failed bravely and spectacularly in a bid for the lOst belt
against Rahilou, who floored him heavily in the ninth and retained via a
unanimous decision.
Rut Khalid was down himself for a count of four in the third and came close
to hitting the canvas again in the last. Rahilou attacked in short bursts and
defended cagily. Southpaw Mendy, 34, somehow survived a lOth-round
battering and took advantage when the champion, utterly exhausted, stopped
punching in the 11th.
Rut Mendy was hanging on once more in the last, particularly from a body
shot, only to nail Rahilou and stagger the champion before the bell.
