RIDDICK BOWE made fortunes but finished up punchdrunk
and lost by the time he was 28.
He is also a broken man, having been divorced by the mother of his children.
So whether Rock Newman, who managed the former world heavyweight
champion, was successful in handling Bowe's career is open to some debate.
Yet when Bowe finished boxing following his incredible rematch against
Andrew Golota in December 1996, the controversial Rock walked away too.

ASAD, mournful Mexican tune
blared slowly. A standing
room only crowd of 4,000
looked on at the Sunset Station as
Tony A y a l a entered the ring for
probably the last time.
Even before Ayala bulled and boxed his way
past Santos Cardona for a 10-round points
success, he sounded like a man giving his own
epitaph.

PROMISING flyweight GABRIEL ELIZONDO was just boxing by the numbers, but
in the third opened up to batter LEONARDO GUTIERREZ on the Ayala-Cardona
card. As Gutierrez stumbled to his corner at the bell, it could have been stopped.
Elizondo, from San Antonio and 8st 2lbs, took target practice in the fourth and
final session, while Gutierrez occasionally winged a desperation right.
Elizondo won 40-36 on all cards as he improved to 8-0 (5). Gutierrez, from
Mexicali, Mexico and 8st 3lbs, drops to 2 1 - 2 2 (9).

UNDEFEATED middleweight KELLY PAVLIK, from the Ray "Boom
Boom" Mancini town of Youngstown, Ohio, advanced to 10-0 (all
inside schedule) by halting Mexican southpaw MARIO LOPEZ in the
second of a scheduled four.
Tall and rangy, Pavlik took a minute or so to find his timing. Lopez had
him missing with rights and hooks before a right to the top of the head
made the Mexicali man touch down briefly in the first.
Lopez (11st 4lbs) took most of the mandatory eight from referee Tony
Weeks standing, but was hurt again immediately. He refused to fold,
however.
