GIVING what American TV commentator Howard Cosell
described as a "savage performance", Aaron Pryor destroyed
Guyana's Lennox Blackmoore in 58 seconds of
round two to retain his World Boxing Association lightwelter
crown.
Pryor threw punches with hardly a pause. "You couldn't
count t h e m , " said Mr Cosell during the ABC-TV telecast
f r om Las Vegas. In fact, playing back the videotape I
counted 109 punches f r om Pryor, give or take a few, in the
frenzied first round, during which he had Blackmoore down
twice.

WITH  Santos Laciar losing his WBA flyweight title, Argentina is
back to having just one world champion in Sergio Palma.
However, the situation should soon be remedied, as Gustavo
Ballas looks certain to win the new WBA super-flyweight title.
Gustavo won a semi-final eliminator by stopping Jackal Muruyama
in 11 r o u n d s and will now face Sukchul Bae for the vacant
title (the brilliant 23-year-old f r om Villa Maria now has 48 wins
and one draw, so he could win the title in his 50th fight.

KIRKLAND LAING could be in line for a third
British welterweight title meeting with champion
Colin Jones. Laing, who lost the title in nine rounds
to the Welshman last year and was beaten over the
same distance in a return, has been matched with
LLOYD HIBBERT, the winner meeting Jones.
The Board of Control have called for contracts to
be signed by August 6, with the final eliminator
taking place before October 20.
