PAT COWDELL, still untried at world level, takes the supreme
gamble tomorrow (Saturday) when he meets featherweight champ
Salvador Sanchez in Houston.
It's a WBC title chance gained without the usual steady conditioning
against ranked opposition. Pat, having his first pro fight abroad,
has cut all the corners to reach his goal and starts a huge underdog
against the daunting champion.

FORMER heavyweight champion Joe Frazier returned to
the ring after a lay-off of five and a half years and was lucky
to get a majority 10 rounds draw with local ex-convict Floyd
"Jumbo" Cummings. Two officials scored it a draw, while
the third gave it to Cummings.
Cummings (15st l0lbs) had Frazier on the verge of being
knocked out at least four times, and had he had more
stamina Frazier (16st 51bs) would not have lasted the
distance.

A BADLY swollen left eye put paid to John Ridgman's
chances of beating Dennis Pryce who performed competently,
if unspectacularly, to force a stoppage in the seventh
of a scheduled eight (three minute) rounder at Pat Brogan's
Mayfair show.
Up to that point, matters were fairly evenly balanced with
perhaps the more experienced Pryce, Wolverhampton, gaining
an edge by virtue of his more accurate jabs.
Ridgman attacked steadily though looked rather mechanical
at times.
