EX-CHAMP Juan Laporte will be the most
dangerous opponent Barry McGuigan has
ever faced. They meet in Belfast on February
23, in a fight which will provide the acid test
of the irishman's world title potential. See
page 24.

WHAT a difference one win can make to a fighter's
career: Lloyd Honeyghan had managed only one outing
in the whole of 1984, yet on the strength of his stunning
European title success in Italy last weekend he is
suddenly a hot property.

THE annual New Year international between England
and Scotland takes place at the Angus Hotel, Dundee, on
Thursday (January 17), with some excellent matches
assured.
Five Olympic representatives are featured: Rod Douglas,
Pat Clinton, Brian Schumacher, John Lyon and
Dougie Young.

TOP honours in the Irish junior championships at the
National Stadium, Dublin, went to an Englishman.
Nineteen-year-old John Reid. from the Sharston club in
Manchester, took the welterweight title and the Best
Boxer award.

BRITISH welterweight champion Lloyd Honeyghan won
the European title in a huge upset by knocking out holder
Gianfranco Rosi of Italy in the third of their scheduled
12-rounder.
Rosi was counted out after 53 seconds of the round,
having been knocked half out of the ring by a tremendous
right hand.
