A FIGHTER'S character can often be
assessed by the manner in which
he responds to his first defeat.
Bernard Dunne, the Irish hero who
crumbled to a shock first-round
setback in Dublin last weekend, took it on the
chin, both literally and metaphorically.
He was dropped several times and halted in
the opening round - 86 seconds to be precise
— of a European super-bantamweight title
defence against undefeated Spaniard Kiko
Martinez.

TWO modern greats have placed a bet
that could see at least one of them
turned into a "round card girl".
Oscar De La Hoya and Sugar Ray
Leonard are good friends and have
been known to share a round or two
of golf, but their friendship will be on
hold on September 15.

DAVE HILTON JNR, the Canadian
super-middle on parole after serving
two-thirds of his jail sentence for
sexually abusing his two teenage
daughters between 1995 and 1998,
has been arrested again.
This time the alleged offence is
assault and uttering death threats
against his girlfriend.
Hilton, 43, launched a winning
comeback in May after nearly seven
years out of action.

FORMER IBF flyweight champion Vic
Darchinyan has his sights set on a
rematch with his conqueror Nonito
Donaire - but not right away.
Stunned by his KO loss to the
Filipino - the first defeat of his pro
career - the Armenian-born puncher is
hoping to get his career back on track
by moving up to super-flyweight. He
hopes to fight for the vacant IBO title
in Sydney in October.

DON'T expect the talk to cease
just because the fight between
Fernando Vargas and Ricardo
Mayorga. scheduled for Los Angeles
on September 8, has been postponed.
These two hot-heads had blasted
each other with insults and also came
to blows at a press conference.
But Vargas had to pull out because
of a blood disorder stemming from an
iron deficiency. Nutritionist Robert
Ferguson said the cause was sores in
Vargas' stomach.
