THE Paul Ingle benefit night in
Scarborough on November 2 was
a success.
Approximately £25,000 was
raised for the former fighter whose
career was cut short by a brain
injury the night he lost his title.
Mickey Cairtwell drove six hours
to be there, while Jim McDonnell,
Colin McMillan and Ingle's former
manager Frank Maloney donated
auction lots.
The Boxing Board and promoters
Frank Warren and Barry Hearn all
gave money.
BELFAST southpaw BRIAN MAGEE
drops down to super-middle against
Tanzania's FRANCIS CHEKA, 13-3-1
(8), in the chief support to Wayne
McCullough-Kiko Martinez on December
1 at the Belfast's King's Hall.
Magee hopes the 10-rounder will
be a Commonwealth eliminator.
Carl Froch gave up the belt last
month and CHARLES ADAMU clashes
with JERMAIN MACKEY on
December 1 for the crown.
FRESH from victory over Mikkel
Kessler, JOE CALZAGHE met Prince
Charles at Cardiff Castle last week.
The Prince of Wales presented
the super-middleweight champion
with a lifetime achievement award,
in the form of a Lonsdale Belt from
the Welsh Sports Hall of Fame.
Calzaghe said: "We had plenty to
talk about. Prince Charles was
asking about losing weight and all
the training I do for a fight."
OLDHAM'S Craig Watson believes
his defeat by John Fewkes will drive
him to victory in next month's
Commonwealth welterweight title
showdown against current champion
Ali Nuumbembe.
Watson readily admits February's
points reversal - the only blemish in
his 12-fight career - was a blessing in
disguise.
TRAINER Emanuel Steward and
former middleweight champion
JERMAIN TAYLOR have parted ways.
Steward worked with Taylor for
his last four fights - a draw with
Winky Wright, two disappointing
though successful defences against
light-middleweights Kassim Ouma
and Cory Spinks and the recent
knockout loss to Kelly Pavlik.
