GEORGE COLLINS and Mo Hussein will never have easier fights than the one-round
knockovers they enjoyed on a joint Gary Davidson and Frank Warren promotion which
marked the return of professional boxing to the Fairfield Hall after more than 20 years.
Collins and Hussein dismissed two of the most pathetically inept Americans to be seen in
a British ring for years. Collins' 17th successive victim was Teddy Johnson of Carolina,
which prompted the inevitable observation that Pearl Carr would have provided stiffer
opposition.
BRITISH lightweight champion Tony Willis got the verdict, and
deservedly so, but the real winner in the scintillating top-liner on
Billy Aird's promotion .was Dundee's Billy Buchanan.
The former two-time ABA finalist had a spotty pro record of
five wins in eight fights, but he fought far above that form and
even in defeat established himself as a thoroughly credible
contender for Willis's title.
IT WAS the moment of truth for Annfield Plain's ambitious
heavyweight Glenn McCrory at Oldham Civic Hall, and
after a crushing defeat in two minutes 20 seconds of the
second of the scheduled 10 rounds by former British
champion Hughroy Currie, the North East boy put the fight
game in a nutshell.
A LIGHTWEIGHT dream fight between Hector "Macho"
Camacho and Livingstone Bramble has been blown out of
the water. And it looks unlikely that we'll see a rematch
between Camacho and Edwin Rosario, who looked so
exciting in his second round slamming of the heavily
favoured Bramble in last month's championship doubleheader
at Miami Beach.
