THE action looks likely to be explosive when Penge's Mike
Durvan defends his Southern Area lightweight title against
Mo Hussein of West Ham in the 10-round top of the bill at
the York Hall, Bethnal Green on Thursday, January 23.
It will be Durvan's first defence of the title he won last
October with a ninth round knockout of Finchley's Steve
Griffiths, and it pits together two men renowned for their
big hitting.

VETERAN referee Harry Gibbs, who was handling one of
his last European championships before retiring in March,
found himself at the centre of a bitter row as Germany's
superstar Rene Weller lost his lightweight title to the
24-year-old local, Gert Bo Jacobsen.

LEON SPINKS looked soft around the middle but fought
with impressive zest to stop Kevin "Kip" Kane at Madison
Square Garden's Felt Forum. Now Spinks must shed weight
to get down to 13st 131bs to challenge Dwight Muhammad
Qawi for the WBA cruiserweight title.

HE'S done it again. For the second year running,
Donald Curry is our choice of the outstanding
overseas fighter of the year.
When picking Curry as our 1984 top foreign
fighter, we wrote that going into 1985, Curry still
seemed to be improving.
And in 1985, he blasted his way to the brink of
super-stardom.
