AT a stroke Britain inherited another world
champion last week when Australia's
International Boxing Federation superfeatherweight
champion Barry Michael
decided to stay here in his native country
following next week's title defence against
Najib Daho in Manchester.

TRIPLE world champion Wilfredo Gomez has said that he is not going to retire and wants a
return with Alfredo Layne, Wilfredo blamed ring rust and a lucky punch for his defeat.
There is even talk of a return bout with his old rival Carlos Zarate, whom Wilfredo stopped
in five rounds back in 1978.
Rafael Cabrera could be the next Dominican to challenge for a world title. On the
Azumah Nelson-Danilo Cabrera show in San Juan, Rafael floored ex-WBC champion
Prudendio Cardona twice and stopped him in round eight. The Dominican has 30 wins in 32
fights, losing only to Hilario Zapata and drawing with the IBF super-flyweight champion
Cesar Polanco.

NEW YORK boxing judges are getting to be repeat offenders. If they keep it up, they
will become incorrigible. So soon after two out of three of them declared WBC lightweight
champ Hector Camacho a winner over Edwin Rosario, two more seemingly goofed by
awarding a split decision to Johnny De La Rosa over Jackie Beard in a Continental
Americas super-featherweight bout at Felt Forum.

ROGER MAYWEATHER. the former WBA junior-lightweight champion, scored
another outstanding win over a Mexican opponent as he outclassed and stopped Sergio
Zambrano, the WBC No 4 lightweight contender, at the Olympic Auditorium.
Referee Larry Rozadilla intervened at the end of the sixth in the scheduled 10-rounder
with Zambrano, the Mexican champion, suffering from a cut over the left eye and another
on the bridge of the nose.
