BY THE time a professional fighter decides to hang
up his gloves, his fame and fortune will have so often
have been determined more by the extent to which he
was adopted by the media during his career than by
ring achievements.
Thus in the classic instance of the sixties we had
Billy Walker, the West Hajn heavyweight who never
won a pro title, yet became a household name and
amassed enough wealth to retire into tax-haven exile.
At the opposite end of the spectrum we have the
current case of Britain's reigning featherweight
champion of Europe.

THE Hagler-Leonard fight's probably going to be a
blockbuster but one wonders if Marvin will be around much
longer. He's been contemplating retirement after family
pressures.
Much will depend on how tough a time he has with Sugar
Ray. If he struggles he might well decide it's time to bow
out. But if Leonard upset the odds you can be sure there'd
be a rematch, even though Sugar Rav savs the Haeler fieht
is a one-off comeback.

MARSHALLED by ABA national coach Kevin Hickey, Young England chalked up a
solid 5-3 victory over the strong Hungarian juniors at the Hilton Hotel, with the Habad
Orphan Aid Society's gala evening providing the occasion and Midland Counties
light-middleweight Richie Woodhall of Telford turning in the most impressive performance
from the home team.
