FIVE English boxers struck gold on the finals night at
the 13th Commonwealth Games, with John Lyon,
Sean Murphy, Darren Dyer, Rod Douglas and Jim
Moran all winning their divisions.
The other five members of the team also took
medals, with Mark Epton and Peter English collecting
silvers and James Oyebola, Joey Jacobs and Eric
Cardouza winning bronzes.
Predictably, the boycott by the powerful African
countries allowed England and Canada to dominate
the medals table with Canada hauling six golds and
four bronzes.
MELDRICK TAYLOR won a gold medal in the 1984 Olympics, was
paid a fortune to turn professional, is unbeaten and must have a good
chance of winning a world title by 1988.
In May this year he took another step along his path to success with
a unanimous points decision over Harold Brazier. It was not an easy
win for Taylor as he had to battle hard in the last two rounds to wrap
up the verdict.
TALK about giving it everything. That's just what
Evander Holyfield did in his gruelling points win
over Dwight Muhammad Qawi to capture the
WBA cruiserweight (they call it "junior
heavyweight") championship.
Holyfield fought flat out for t h e better part of 15
torrid rounds at Atlanta, Georgia
and was taken to hospital
afterwards for an overnight stay
to be treated for dehydration
and heat exhaustion.
