IF boxing has too many sanctioning groups already, then hold on, because here comes
another. The Universal Boxing Association has arrived and joined the WBA, WBC, IBF,
WBO and IBC on the world scene.
With the press and public ridiculing the amount of organisations that presently exist,
the question that must be asked is what useful service can the UBA possibly provide to
boxing?
On the surface, the answer would appear to be none. If having more than one champion
per division is upsetting, the possibility of six men now holding a world crown is
mind-boggling.

TREVOR ANDREWS, the record-setting boy wonder of the
early 1970s and subsequent England international, made a
winning comeback on Repton's excellent 19-bout open show
at York Hall — at the age of 33!

EARLY in 1990 in New Zealand, J o h n Irwin, a 20-year-old apprentice
joiner from Denaby Main in Yorkshire, quietly and efficiently boxed
four times to become Commonwealth Games featherweight champion.
Richie Woodhall won the light-middleweight division, and the two wins
brought England's tally of gold medals to 35.
John, in fact, was only the second boxer from this country to win the
featherweight title: F. R. Meacham was the first, having won the title at
the weight in the inaugural Games in Hamilton, Canada, way back in
1930.

Middlesbrough promoter J o h n Spensley
has come forward with the package which
he is prepared to put on at Gateshead in
February, assuming Mendoza survives a
scheduled January 19 Bangkok defence
